Low –E Values On Replacement Windows

When searching for a good window, it is a good idea to understand what “low-E” values are, and how they will impact your decision. Low-E stands for low-emissivity. It is a value given to all materials, not just glass, which states how well that material will radiate energy. All materials will absorb, emit and reflect certain amounts of energy, so by choosing a replacement window with low e-values, somewhere between 0 and 1.0, you will be very close to the perfect score of 0.o.

For example, if asphalt has an emissivity of .80, then its reflective value would be .20. This means that it will absorb and emit 80% of the radiant energy, and reflects only 10%. Window glass alone will naturally carry fairly high e-values, around .95 when unglazed. To help lower this number, window manufacturers will glaze windows, add aluminum to the frames, pump Argon gas between the panes, and generally apply several industry methods to help bring this number down.

The reason it is important is that by reducing this emissivity value, homeowners will in effect be controlling their energy bills by limiting the amounts of energy the sun applies to the house. If the sun is pumping radiant energy through a window all day, it will take far more energy to cool the house down in the summer, than it ever would with a low- e glass.

Windows with low e- rated glass, coupled with excellent thermo-insulating properties will help lower energy bills, and preserve the environment in a number of ways, for years to come. This is why investing in low-e glass is always worth the few extra dollars. While it might mean a little more out of pocket up front, it will save much more over the course of a lifetime contact our Minneapolis Window Company for more information. Since windows typically don’t get replaced more than once every 15 or 20 years, the extra money up front will be earned back many times over during the course of your monthly energy bills. 952-746-6661
