Curb appeal is a major issue for many of the homeowners we talk to around the Twin Cities. This summer some of you may be tackling exterior remodeling projects to give your home a facelift. Changing the color scheme is a popular thing. That’s fairly easy if your siding and your window frames are wood. But what if those windows are vinyl? Can you (or should you) paint them?
In our previous post we addressed the issue of whether or not vinyl window frames can be painted. If you haven’t read that post, click here to check it out first; there are some issues you should consider before you start painting. After you’ve read that article, you may decide you’d be better off just replacing those windows to get the frame color you’re after.
If after evaluating all this information, you’ve decided to paint those vinyl windows anyway, here are some tips to help you get the best results.
Before you go to paint your vinyl windows, you will want to do some prep beforehand. This is important because the paint is not going to stick well and stay if you don’t prime the surface. You will want to scrub the window frames and remove any and all debris from the outside. You then need to scuff sand the outside of the frame.
Apply primer over the entire frame, since this is going to give it a nice finished look once it is completely painted over. Primer will give your finish paint a better base to cling to, and it is especially important if you’re going from a darker color to lighter. This is a step that should not be avoided, no matter how good your paint is.
Once this is done you then can begin painting the windows whatever color you chose to paint them. We do suggest, however, to avoid dark colors because of the potential for the window frames to warp from heat absorption. If you do opt for a darker color, look for paint shades certified as ‘vinyl safe.’ While we DO NOT recommend painting vinyl windows and do not endorse any particular paint company, we are aware that Sherwin Williams has a wide range of vinyl safe paint colors.
