Need a Front New Door? Keep These Tips in Mind

A door may seem like a minor thing in the overall scheme of life, but when it comes to your home, the right front door matters.

The first thing people see when they visit your home is the front door, so it’s important to have one that fits your personality and the aesthetic of your home. When you’re shopping for a new door, keep these four things in mind.

Doors come in a wide range of materials, from vinyl to wood to steel. Vinyl doors can be a great economical choice, but they aren’t as sturdy as other options like steel.  Although steel doors offer the most security, they’re still prone to rust, which means they may need periodic replacement.

Wood doors are a beautiful option, but they have a tendency to expand with the seasons, and Minnesota weather can be hard on wood entry doors if they aren’t protected by storm doors.  You can get the best of both worlds, however, with an aluminum clad wood door – the beauty of wood on the inside, and the low-maintenance and weather resistance of aluminum on the outside.

A good compromise is the fiberglass door. It’s durable, delivering strength similar to steel, can be designed to mimic the look of wood, and is low maintenance. It’s also one of the most reasonably priced door materials available.

Energy Efficiency in Entry Doors

Like windows, doors are also there to help keep a home well insulated. After window openings, door openings are the second greatest source of heat loss in a home, so it’s important to choose an exterior door that’s energy efficient.  In edition to keeping your heating and cooling costs down, they’re also very eco-friendly.  We offer many exterior doors like those from ProVia that have earned the EnergyStar rating, your assurance of energy savings.

Door Color and Style

As mentioned above, the look of your door is just as important as its function. To increase curb appeal and create a more comfortable living environment, make sure you have the right color to match or complement the rest of your house and style as well as your own unique taste.  Some homeowners choose doors that blend well with the other exterior elements of their homes, while others opt for a more dramatic approach and select a front door in a vibrant color that stands out.  Neither approach is better – what appeals to you is what’s best.

Professional Entry Door Installation

Although it is possible to install a door yourself, it’s always better to have a professional install your exterior door for you. That way, you can be confident it has been installed according to manufacturer’s specifications and that it will perform the way it was intended to.

We can help you meet all of the above criteria for your new door, as we are a licensed MN exterior home improvement company and always happy to assist you in making your home a more comfortable place to live.  We install entry, patio, and storm doors in the Minneapolis area.   Visit us on Pinterest to see just some of the manufacturers and styles available.
