Patio Door Needing Replacement? Why Consider French Doors Instead

Is your patio door sticking, not sliding properly, or just plain worn out? Would you be surprised if we told you that in many cases French doors might be better than your existing patio door?  Sliding patio doors aren’t the only option when you’re looking to update the gateway to your outdoor space. French doors can look great in any home, but they’re especially fitting for more traditional style homes, such as Craftsman, Victorian, and Colonial, just to name a few. (Those traditional sliders can look out of place in older homes.)

While we offer a lot of options for Minneapolis homeowners who want to have new patio doors put in, we’d like to give you some reasons why your next patio door should be a French door combination – like this set from one of our favorite door companies, ProVia.

In addition to providing a less contemporary look, French doors have some advantages over sliding patio doors:

  • Since French patio doors have less overall glass area than sliding patio doors, they are in general more energy efficient, an important point if lowering your heating and cooling bills is a priority.
  • French doors come with far more decorative design options; sliding patio doors rarely have things such as grids and decorative art glass.
  • Because of the ability to have deadbolt locks, French doors are more secure.
  • You get far more fresh air when you open a set of French doors.  A sliding patio door lets in air in only half the opening; with French doors you can open up both and take advantage of the full space.
  • When it comes to ease of operation, French doors have a slight advantage.  If you’re thinking about remodeling your home for aging in place, it takes far less strength to open a French door than to push a sliding panel.
  • Ease of cleaning is another plus for French doors.  If you’ve struggled to clean out the dirt and grime from your sliding door’s track, you now what we’re talking about.

Concerned about the cost?  With most companies, the cost of French doors vs. sliding patio doors is about the same.  If the idea of replacing your existing sliding patio door with French doors appeals to you, get in touch with us today for a free in-home consultation or a private appointment in our Savage showroom.  We aim to be THE door company for the Minneapolis area, and we’d love to show you the different French door models we install.
