Pros and Cons of Minneapolis Exterior Steel Doors

We’re continuing our series evaluating the different types of exterior door materialsOur previous post was on fiberglass entry and patio doors; in this article we’ll discuss steel doors.

Steel is one of the most common materials to use for exterior doors,  If you’re considering this type of entry or patio door for your home then you want to find out the pros and cons. If you’re looking for a durable yet economical solution for your home and one that is energy efficient, steel might be your go-to door choice.

Evaluating Steel Exterior Doors

Costs:  Steel doors are less expensive than comparable wood doors, and the price usually ranges from $150 to $400 (not including installation fee). You can get more expensive doors if they are custom made or if you choose add-ons like glass, special hardware, etc.

Durability: Steel doors have a shorter lifespan than fiberglass, but they are a durable, strong solution to put in a home. Steel doors stand up to the elements well, and they are a strong deterrent against would-be burglars.  But if the finish does get damaged, the is susceptible to rust  You can seal the steel tightly, so no leaks get into the home.

How to Care for Steel Doors:  Regularly washing the door with a mild detergent or dish soap (nothing harsh) should keep it looking good.  You can apply a clear coating such as urethane, or even a protectant or non-powdering wax meant for vehicles.

Repairs and Maintenance: Scratches, dents, and chipped paint are all common for the outside of steel doors. The finish on steel doors can be damaged by hail if it has enough force on impact, such as hail powered by strong winds. Generally some touch-up paint will take care of the cosmetic issue. Dents may be a little more expensive to repair, and if they are substantial, replacement might be more cost effective.  However, if the damage is caused by hail, this should be a covered claim under homeowner’s insurance.

Energy Efficiency: Steel doors are one of the most energy-efficient options to go with when you want to keep the comfort level even inside the home. Steel entry doors can provide up to five times more insulating value than other comparable doors.
