Minnesota’s extreme weather can hard on exterior entry doors. ProVia’s new PermaTech line of composite door frames is designed to protect doors from hostile environmental conditions but aren’t a substitute for traditional aluminum-wood door frame assemblies in all circumstances. Like other ProVia door frames, PermaTech frames have special features to guard against moisture, wicking, and rot—and installation is just as easy. They can be a smart choice for a tough climate. PermaTech door frames, installed properly, excel under these types of conditions:
However, wood frames, clad with standard polyvinylchloride (PVC) aluminum, should still be your first choice. This traditional combination offers excellent protection against normal levels of moisture—as long as the frames are installed properly. Wood is indeed susceptible to rot, but moisture damage in most cases is traceable to faulty installations, not the material itself.
The brickmold area is a typical suspect for the causes of rot in wood frames. Any type of moisture, whether due to flowing water or long-term exposure to humid conditions, will suffuse in the wood. If moisture reaches the bottom of the wood and can’t fall to the ground, rot will surely follow. Fortunately, ProVia wood frame–aluminum cladding combinations solve the problem with thresholds that extend beyond the brickmold, which seal the wood from the ground. As long as the frame is sealed at the time of installation, the extended thresholds will significantly reduce the risk of moisture damage.
PermaTech frames must also be installed properly, and compared to wood frames, there’s one big difference that all installers must heed. PermaTech frames require five installation screws for each side, compared to traditional installations, which generally require three. Finally, PVC aluminum frame cladding will hide the installation screws and provide a smooth, even surface for painting or other decoration.
But whether wood or composite, ProVia door frames can provide homeowners with long-term protection against a range of environmental conditions. Window Outfitters specializes in door and window solutions to help Minneapolis/St. Paul area homeon
