Questions Often Asked About Replacement Windows for Minneapolis Homes

As the weather here in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area is finally warming up, we’ve talked to a number of homeowners thinking about spring remodeling. After the high heating bills many of you got hit with this winter, it seems like energy-efficient replacement windows are at the top of the home improvement wish list.

If you’re considering replacing the windows in your home, then you may want to gather some information about them and how they might be able to help. We are THE replacement window company serving the Twin Cities, so you’ve come to the right place for some of the basics about replacement windows.

What are replacement windows?  Replacement windows are just that; they are designed to replace the existing windows in a home. They are installed in existing window openings.  fYou have your choice of ordering either stock or custom-manufactured windows.  Either way, the size of the window is determined by the size of the current window opening.  (You can at times enlarge the opening for a bigger window, but that’s a project that is much more involved.)

Can I repair my existing ones, or do I have to replace my windows? Some people wonder if repairing their windows would be better than simply replacing them. Sometimes this is all that is needed, but it is important to note that you should think about the condition of elements that could indicate you need to replace the window entirely.

If the window frame is rotten, it has to come out. If your windows are older, they probably need replacement. Chances are they are not as energy efficient as newer windows.  Perhaps the seals hav failed or there are other reasons your windows aren’t doing the job they are meant to do. For example, often if there is excessive condensation or the window hardware is not working, you’re better off with replacements.

When is the best time to replace windows? You can replace windows during any time throughout the year, but we often recommend spring or fall. Why?  When the weather is mild, chances are you won’t be running either your furnace or your air conditioning, so there isn’t heating or cooling loss when those window spaces are open. Also, there is less likelihood of damage to your landscaping at that time. In early spring most of your grass, shrubs, and perennials are still in a state of dormancy from winter, and in fall things are dying back. Spring window replacement means your home will be in great shape for those hot summer months, and fall replacement means you’re ready for another cold Minneapolis winter.

If you are ready to have the windows in your home replaced, then speak with our replacement window professionals to have us come out and provide a no-obligation quote. We work with a variety of manufacturers of quality energy-efficient replacement windows, and we can make suggestions as to what might work well for you and your home.
