Replacement Windows and Doors for the Historic Home in Minneapolis

Historic homes are far more than just a place to live; they are a slice of history, that have a world of experiences inside them. Taking care of these gems can be a lot of work, but for those who love to do it, they know how important period windows and doors are, and they make the effort to use them when remodeling. These 2 things, windows and doors, are rarely stock sizes, and often times need to be made to order. However, if dealing with the right company, many period windows and doors can be found in stock, and offer the same great look and function as the originals.

The windows used in historic homes often served a different purpose than windows of today. Since there was no air conditioning prior to the early 1950’s, these older homes were built to allow cross ventilation, so the windows were traditionally taller, and more narrow than windows of today. Many of them also came with transom’s above to allow all the hot air that rose to the ceiling to escape, without needing to open the entire window.

Period doors were much the same way. They had side lights to let the homeowner see outside, and make them aware of someone walking to the house. Since nobody had phones long ago, homeowners never knew when someone was arriving until they saw them walking up the drive. These windows and doors also have a little different appeal than do the clean, streamlined look of today. The window panes were larger, they often had stained glass embedded in them, and they often came with ledges to sit on, so residents could sit at the window and look outside. These are all the exact features that make us fall in love with the historic homes in the first place.

Restoring an historic home is well worth the effort. So if you are going to tackle the job, make sure you have an experienced professional behind you.
