Last April, MN Governor Tim Pawlenty signed a bill into law that would effectively promote jobs and help preserve Minnesota’s heritage at the same time. It is called the Minnesota Jobs Stimulus Bill, a collection of tax incentives targeted towards revitalizing urban, as well as main street communities through a reinvestment program for historic properties.
What this means to the owner of historic commercial properties is that they will now be eligible for a State tax credit, equal to 20 percent of the cost of rehabilitating an historic property that is within the districts approved. These properties must be income producing, so unfortunately residential properties are not included, but the program does promise to generate more jobs, and stimulate the economy at the same time. This is the same kind of tax credit the federal government has had in place since 1976; the federal rehabilitation tax credit, that had experienced some very positive effects. The Minnesota Jobs Stimulus Bill is the
State version of the same idea.
Projects like this will begin to rebuild the cities from the inside out. They create jobs, invite lucrative businesses outside the beltway to move back in, and they will bring a new life as well as a walk down memory lane back to what was once a lucrative and prosperous society.
