Replacing Your Windows? Here’s What to Ask Your Contractor

Replacing your windows is a big decision. It’s vital to choose the correct window for your home and your needs, but you also need to be sure that the contractor you hire is a good one.  Your new windows will only be as good as the installation workmanship.  Improperly installed windows can cause as much damage as keeping the old, damaged ones for another year.  This takes a little homework before you sign an agreement with the company. There are a few things you need to know when you’re shopping around.

Estimates and Knowledge
Written, free estimates are a common practice in the contracting world. Generally, if a company presents a high-pressure sales pitch and charges for your estimate, it’s a good idea to pass them up.

The company should also be knowledgeable about options for your specific need and the product choices available.

References
It’s also important to see if they have local references that you can talk to. Past customers will be able to provide you with information on how their installations went and how the windows are still functioning. They can also provide you with valuable information about how complaints were dealt with.

In addition to past customers, check the Better Business Bureau to see if the company is listed with them. This will provide you with further information about the track record.

Warranties and Written Agreement
Remember to ask about the warranties and financing they offer. Lifetime warranties are the best option for this, and it’s a good item to include on a written work statement.  Find out if your contractor offers a warranty in addition to that of the manufacturer.  Often manufacturer warranties will not include installation defects.

The statement also should include materials used, the expected timeline, and a list of exactly what the company will do for you.

Insurance and Licensing
For your protection, ask the company for their license number as a contractor and proof of insurance. If they don’t want to provide this information, it may be a good idea to keep shopping. Although these items won’t guarantee good workmanship, they still offer you legal protection if there happens to be damage to the property or worker injury.  Under Minnesota law, only general contractors are required to have a building contractor’s license, but most reputable speciality contractors such as those who provide exterior home remodeling services like replacement windows also have licenses.

In addition, verify that the company has either a physical address or an office. This adds further credence to their professionalism.

At Window Outfitters we’re committed to providing quality workmanship and professional installation service.  Our satisfied customers say we delilver on both counts.
