Save Time and Money by Choosing Fiberglass Exterior Doors

Are you caught between a rock and a hard place as you’re shopping for a new entry door?

You love the beauty of wood, but you dread the costs and time involved in keeping it looking good, plus you’re afraid of the damage Minnesota weather might do to it.  A maintenance-free door would solve those problems, but still you’d like the look of real wood. So what do you do?

Fortunately, you can have the best of both worlds with fiberglass doors.  Quality fiberglass entry doors offer wood finishes that are modern with a variety of designs, while keeping the benefits of easy maintenance and high durability.

Initial Cost of Entry Doors

07jul21c3a15Wooden doors of a good quality can be quite costly. Additionally, in order for the door to be protected from all the elements, each side needs to be finished.

For much less than it costs for a wood door, you can purchase a fiberglass door. These come prefinished and are available in a wide range of colors and styles that are sure to please any taste. The market for wood products is not as stable and often results in costs that are more than fiberglass products. Wood doors generally will be more costly than fiberglass doors of similar quality, despite fiberglass having protection that is better with a look that is amazingly similar.

Fiberglass Doors Mean Easy Maintenance

Wood doors require a lot of maintenance, even more if you’re not protecting it from all the elements under a large porch that is covered or with a storm door. (In our climate, it’s almost a requirement that north-facing wood entry doors be protected with a storm door.)

In order to keep the door in good condition, you need to inspect it annually with full restoration or touch-up of the finish every couple of years. To do a full restoration you must remove it from the frame and strip it completely and have each side refinished.

However, fiberglass doors only need to be refinished after approximately five years, depending on its type of exposure to the weather. Typically, restoration of fiberglass doors require just a good cleaning and clear coat application.

Fiberglass doors are not vulnerable to the same types of warping and rot as wood doors.

Fiberglass Doors Have Real Wood Look and Feel

Manufacturing process that is currently used for fiberglass doors gives a near perfect duplication of wood grain that is natural. When having the right finish, you can have a door with the exact look and texture as wood doors. Strength and durability of fiberglass doors are improved by being engineered to duplicate a wood doors heft and internal frame. Make sure to choose the right material to get the right door for your home.
