Should You Get Replacement Windows or Those Designed for New Construction?

Whether defending against incessant rain, heat, or the harshness of icy winter months, your home’s exterior is a warrior on the front lines in a battle to keep you sheltered, and your windows are part of its armor. Diverse weather conditions can wreak havoc on your house, especially your windows, and this is no less true in Minneapolis where wind-driven rain storms are common. But looking for the right windows for homes in the Twin Cities area can be a bit tricky.  Our wide range of temps can cause a variety of damage situations.  So before committing to new windows, investigate. Sniff out the exact problem so you can find out whether your windows need repair or it’s time for new ones.

We understand that replacing windows might be perceived as an expensive project to undertake, so know what to look for before you buy so you’re not wasting your money. No matter what, quality windows are a crucial part of your home, and they certainly warrant a little TLC. But, how do you know when it’s necessarily time for new construction or replacement windows?

Well, first you should understand the main difference. New construction windows, also called Full Frame Replacement Windows, are generally installed when a house is being buil, or an addition is being added to your existing home. Replacing an existing window with a new construction window is only done when there is a need for a new frame due to stud damage or if completely tearing down and replacing a wall and its siding.

Replacement windows, often called Insert Replacement/or Retrofit Windows, are measured specifically to fit perfectly in place of the existing window, and they are often custom built. These are less expensive since they are installed from within the house and cause no damage to the wall or siding. These are also easier and less-time consuming to install.

Consider your needs and make an educated decision. If you are building a new home, replacing an entire wall, or building an addition onto your house, you may want new construction windows. Windows designed for new construction are probably the best answer if you’ve got structural damage around your window opening from water or other issues.  But if you just want to get rid of that draft or increase your home’s energy efficiency, then replacement windows are the best option that won’t break the bank. Either way, if looking for an MN window company, look no further than Window Outfitters.  We offer an extensive variety of windows from top-quality manufacturers such as Hurd, Andersen, Marvin, Lindsay, and more.  We offer free consultations – we’d be happy to come out and take a look at your home and make a recommendation as to the best windows for you and your home.  Give us a call today.
