Siding Factors to Consider – Part 2

Note:  Part 1 of this post covered some basics of residential siding.  If you haven’t read this previous post, click here.

Knowing how to make the right decisions is essential when it comes to the siding on your home. Determining which is best depends on your needs and wants. You have to do the right amount of research, but you also need to know what you’re looking for to accurately determine the best siding product for your home.

Warranty: When looking at the manufacturer’s guarantee , here are some considerations.

  • How long is the material guaranteed for?
  • Does it cover installation labor or just materials?
  • If it has a lifetime warranty will it transfer to a new owner?
  • Does this warranty cover everyday wear and incidental damages?

If the warranty on the materials of your choice does not take in to account these factors, think about buying extra insurance that does.

Unanticipated Costs:  If insulation is needed, how much will insulation add to the cost that was quoted by your siding contractor?

Modern vinyls and newer metal sidings may come with attached insulation, or as a base layer that form-fits, above which the vinyl is applied. But for some siding products, you may need insulation behind the siding.  If the cost is not part of the square foot quote, this additional cost will be added into the overall material supply and installation charge.

Heavier siding materials, like insulation-merged vinyls or cement fiber panels, may add an additional shipping charge which will also be reflected in your cost.

Keep in mind that there are some materials and certain older or architecturally elaborate homes that do require professional installation and the use of particular cutting tools and protective wear. These as well as other extraordinary factors may add to the overall cost, although the added cost is an investment that pays returns when the materials and installation work come with a sufficient warranty.

Energy Savings:  When looking at energy saving benefits, keep in mind that insulation choices directly have an effect on the price as well as the energy savings aspect. Make it a point to discuss energy savings with your siding contractor, who may be able to offer you advice on how to attain the highest efficiency for your region and climate.  You might also consult local utility companies that offer energy audits and structural engineers in order to find out whether the claimed savings are precise.

Choosing the right contractor for your siding is also important.
