Spruce Up Your Front Door for the Holidays

As you are putting up your lights and holiday decorations, don’t forget about your front entry.  Your front door is where you will greet most of your guests this holiday season, so you want to make sure that your front door says, “Welcome to our home.”  Here are a few ideas you may be able to use to boost the appeal of your house from the street as well as making your guests feel in the holiday mood from the moment they come up your front walk.

  • Light the way.  Traditional holiday lights intertwined on railings or shrubs can bring your festive look from your house to the sidewalk, making a welcoming flow from the curb to your door.  But think outside the box here, too – consider bag candles.  If the weather is cold enough, you might make Scandinavian ice candles (check out this video for an easy how-to).
  • Christmas trees aren’t just for indoors.  If you’re lucky enough to have pine or fir trees near your front door, you can decorate those with weather-proof ornaments and lights.  Otherwise, why not put a decorated tree in a pot or stand on your porch beside the front door?
  • Wreaths are a warm welcome. As you can see from the photo, a holiday wreath doesn’t have to be made from pine or fir.  Why not wire together some ornaments of the same color?  Also consider wreaths that reflect your home’s trim color.  Red and green are certainly festive and traditional holiday colors, but you can use just about any color if you incorporate golds, glitters, and similar holiday trim.
  • Refresh your entry area by giving your front door’s exterior a bold new painted finish.  Why not red for the holidays?  A quart of paint will do it, and you can always repaint after the holidays if red isn’t your year-round color choice.
  • Add candles to your side lights or entry windows.  Real burning candles can be a fire hazard, but you can buy battery-operated faux tapers or plug-ins.  Bunched strings of white lights in containers work nicely as well.
  • Don’t forget the over-the-door area. While wreaths are traditionally hung either on the door or beside it, you can also add a swag over the door which either uses materials from the wreath or complements it.  A nice fresh pine bough over the door not only looks festive but it greets your callers with a beautiful scent.
