Steel Doors vs. Wood Doors…what is the best choice for Minnesotans

If you are in the market for a new front door, you need to ask yourself if you prefer steel, or wood. Both have a great reputation so it is just a matter of what you want. Some of the advantages are spelled out here so that you will have a little more information to help you make up your mind.

To start with, wood is the traditional, natural look that we have all come to know and love, no matter how plain it is. If it happens to have a beautifully carved design in it, this will instantly make your home unique and give it that mark of distinction that is just as special as each member in it.

Wood can be stained as well as painted, and will allow you to drill holes in it for a knocker or wreath hanger, or even a peak hole if it doesn’t have one already. Wood always works; at least for the time being.

The down side is that wood can warp, or split, leaving the homeowner with a less than efficient entry that could mean money out the door- literally. Most wood doors are also subject to water rot if they are not installed correctly. While most wood doors these days are reinforced to help prevent these things from occurring, wood has this inherent property; which is why the steel door was invented in the first place.

Steel doors are not subjected to warping or cracking, and can’t be kicked in as easily as a wooden framed door can. Steel doors often come with a magnetic seal, making them some of the most energy efficient items in your home. While not subject to rot, they can be a victim of rust, but with the right preventative medicine, this is easily corrected unlike a wooden door that will need to be replaced.

All in all, both doors can be a good choice; it is just a matter of what you want. By talking with one of our trained professionals we will be able to help you sort through all the choices, in order to come up with the right door for you.
