Ten Classic Window Styles

For as long as people have had houses, they’ve needed windows. This need has created a surprisingly wide variety of styles.  Here’s a summary of the ten most popular ones.

Single Sash:   A simply designed window is the single sash window. This model is installed vertically and the top part can’t be moved. When you want to open the window, lift the lower part.

Double Hung:  These windows are the most popular in homes today. Instead of one mobile panel, double hung windows have two vertical sashes which can be moved at will.

Casement:  Popular in the UK before the doubl- hung came into style, casement windows are still common in Europe. This type of window is easily opened by either using a crank or opening it as you would a door.  They are also very popular in the United States as more contemporary alternatives to a double- or single-hung window.

Awning:   If you want to open your windows but avoid leaves or rain from coming in, the awning window is a good option. Due to its vertical mounting and hinge at the top, an awning window is opened by pushed it outwards.

Bay and Bow:  Originally used in English Renaissance castles, these windows maximize the amount of sunlight entering a room. This is because they’re arranged to let the light in as the sun travels across the sky over the course of the day.  The bay window is the more boxy version of a bow window.  Bow windows are curved and use more glass, but they work well in older homes which may have curved architecture.

Jalousie:  For an all-American window, check out the jalousie window. This model is made up of then strips of staggered glass, which open and close like blinds. It was invented in 1900, by Joseph J. Walker.

Palladian:  Another window inspired by Renaissance work, this window is made up of one central unit with an arched top and framed by two smaller windows.

Sliding Sash:  Horizontally mounted, the sliding sash window glides along a track to open and close. This makes it a good choice for over kitchen sinks or counters.

Fixed:  This type of window can’t be opened at all, but it comes in all kinds of sizes and shapes. They’re often used in doors or in exterior walls to let in natural light.
