The Differences Between Vinyl and Fiber Cement Siding Options

As a quality Minneapolis siding installation company, we value the products that we install. We offer only the highest in quality, so that our customers are able to get the siding options they love. If you’re shopping for new siding for your home, you should consider the pros and cons of the various siding products that you choose to go with before making your decision. While there are a variety of siding products on the market, the two our customers choose most often are insulated vinyl and fiber cement.  Both vinyl siding and fiber cement have benefits and drawbacks of their own, but usually these two are fairly close in quality.

Lifespan of Vinyl vs. Fiber Cement Siding:  Among all quality siding options, vinyl siding has the shortest lifespan of them all. It is durable, but it is also a siding option that has to be replaced or repaired more frequently than some other types. It is able to last around 30 years, while fiber cement siding is able to last about 60. This means its double the life of vinyl siding.

The Makeup of These Two Siding Products:  Vinyl siding is composed of a plastic, which can make it easy to catch on fire or melt. Fiber cement is made up of a mixture of wood, sand and cement, providing a fire resistant outside to the home that you own.  If you’re looking for an eco-friendly siding product, fiber cement tops vinyl.  But if you’re looking for a more economical siding, vinyl costs less to install.

Siding Maintenance:  Both need minimal maintenance when it comes to cleaning the outside of your home, although vinyl siding does seem to collect dirt and dust easier. Fiber cement just needs a good rain or spray down to keep it looking good.  Vinyl may need more aggressive scrubbing.

There are numerous differences between the two types of siding, and these are just a small sampling of them. Choosing the ideal siding for your Minneapolis home should not be hard to do with the right information.  And if you can’t make up your mind, we’d be happy to schedule a free consultation with you to discuss which siding product would be appropriate for you and your home.  Speak with us here at Window Outfitters, your exterior remodelers for the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas.
