The Right Windows Can Bring More Natural Light Into Your Minneapolis Home

Usually when people talk about energy-efficient replacement windows, they are referring to windows that help cut your heating and cooling bills.  But did you know that when you choose the right windows you can actually reduce your electric bill because you won’t need lights on as often?  Being exposed to sunlight also has health benefits you won’t get from artificial light sources.

One of the emerging trends in home design is maximizing natural light in a home.  A home with plenty of glass to let in sunlight is appealing to buyers and they’re willing to pay more for a home like this.  Post-pandemic, on average Americans are spending more waking hours at home.

  • 2019:  The average person spent 50% of their awake time at home
  • 2023:  The average person spends 62% of their awake time at home

That’s a 12% increase in four years.  And that could translate into an increase in electrical usage because of the need to have lights turned on.  Now, you might think, ‘Well, that’s really insignificant.’  But the reality is that those little things add up, and at year-end it might surprise you how much your electrical bill has gone up.  But choosing the right replacement windows could mean more sunlight and less need for lights on.

This can be accomplished in two ways:

  • major remodeling to install windows and full-glass doors that expand your current glass area;
  • or you can opt for replacement windows in the current window openings that let in more natural light than the windows you have now.

For example, in the photo shown above, crank-out casement windows flank a picture window, giving a full wall of glass to let in light.  Casement windows are a great way to let more light in because there is no dividing sash like a double-hung window would have.  You can also opt for the same style windows with thinner frames, such as fiberglass windows from Marvin.

Or in the same size window opening you might add a garden window, or a bay or bow window.  Since these style windows have glass on several sides, you get more sunlight than a regular flat window.

If you’d like more sunlight in your home, why not schedule a free consultation with us?  We’d be happy to suggest changes to your current windows that can do this.  We are THE replacement window company for the Minneapolis area
