Time to Spruce Up Your Minneapolis MN Home for Spring

Finally spring is upon us all here in the Minneapolis area, and a lot of homeowners have been waiting for the warm weather to return so that they are able to take on the work that they missed getting done last spring and summer. Here is a to-do list for the outdoors and your home.

  • Look on your roof for any damages that the winter has left behind. This past winter was a harsh one and you want to make sure you take care of any damages that you see before they become too big of a problem.  Roof repairs should be taken care of before the heavy rainstorms hit.
  • Clean the gutters out and ensure that all debris is removed. You might also want to clean them out using a hose and make sure they are working properly. Using a hose to fill your gutters with water is a good wait to check for leaks.  If you notice that they need repairs, then make sure to have them done right away.
  • Since the snow might have left some damage on your yard, make sure to spruce it up. Feed it, mulch the landscape and get it back in working order before the weather becomes a bit hotter. You want to ensure that any fungus or insects are not left behind because of all the moisture.
  • Give your deck a good wash and re-stain it if necessary. This will make the outdoors around your home look that much better and it can also make sure that it is completely cleaned off and ready for those outdoor barbecues you’re going to be having with friends and family.
  • Check the walkways and driveway for cracks. Minneapolis winters can cause damage to these areas, and you want to make sure that they are taken care of before they become larger issues that you’re not going to be able to fix.  It’s easier to patch small cracks than to have the entire surface replaced because the damage is too substantial for patching to be adequate.
  • Cut down the overgrown shrubs and make sure to trim out any weeds or other areas that seem to be blocking the view of the home. You want to ensure that your home looks beautiful for the coming summer.
  • Look into the siding to find out if there are leaks or cracks and make sure that they are repaired by a siding pecialist that knows what they are doing so that you do not have to replace all of the siding.  Deep cold and heavy snow have caused cracks in the vinyl siding of many homes around the Twin Cities; it’s especially important to give your home a good inspection if you have vinyl siding.
  • Make sure to service the heating and cooling system. Clean it out and make sure it is running smoothly before the temperatures rise and you actually need that air conditioning.
  • Get all of the tools that you need ready and serviced if necessary. This could be everything from the rake to the lawnmower. You want to ensure that they are oiled, cleaned, sharpened, and ready to go.
