Tips for Aging Minneapolis Homeowners Choosing Replacement Windows

Aging baby boomers make up the largest demographic here in the Minneapolis area – as well as the rest of the country.  The trend among this age group is home remodeling to allow them to ‘age in place,’ or changing things in their homes to facilitate ease of use, reduce maintenance, and plan for future needs.   One important item in this type of home remodeling is replacing the windows, especially if the home is an older one.

Marvin’s Ultimate in-swing casement window

For much of the 20th century, the most common style of window used in homes was the double-hung window.  In fact, it still remains the most popular.  But double-hung windows can be challenging for elderly and disabled people to operate.  The alternatives?  Casement windows and slider or glider windows.  Both of these windows are much easier to open and close and require far less exertion. There is even one type of casement window that operates without a crank – simply push it out! Ease of operation is a very important consideration if you’re planning on remaining in your home indefinitely.

In addition to ease of operation, here are things that should also be taken into account when you’re selecting new windows:

  • Choose replacement windows that can be cleaned easily, without needing to go outside and get on a ladder.  Many modern windows have tilt-in sashes that allow you to clean the exterior from inside. At least one window company we work with – Marvin – offers an in-swing casement window. (See photo above.) That style window is a breeze to clean! There are also windows with built-in blinds between the glass panes that mean no dusting or blind cleaning.
  • Look for replacement windows that require little or no maintenance.  Vinyl and fiberglass windows are great alternatives to real wood frame windows that need frequent upkeep such as repainting or re-staining.
  • Choose window styles (and thinner frames) that allow more light to come in.  As we age, our eyesight suffers, so having more natural light can be very helpful.  You might also consider replacing several windows that are installed together with one larger window.  Or take it a step further and replace that large window with a sliding patio door. or double French door. That door will not only let in more light and air but also give you an additional oversized access point.
