Tips for Minneapolis Homeowners on Choosing Replacement Windows

As spring hits, so do the calls into our Minneapolis replacement window company.  As THE leading window replacement contractor in the Twin Cities, people often turn to us for advice about choosing the best windows for their homes.  And while each home and each homeowner is unique and there is no one window that’s right for all, we can offer you some tips to help you narrow down your choices.  And even better, our window experts will be happy to either meet with you in your home or set up a personal, private appointment at our door and window showroom in Savage.

Use These Tips When Choosing Replacement Windows

The first thing you should have on your list is looking ONLY at energy-efficient windows.  Otherwise you’re just literally letting your money fly out the window.  If your new windows don’t save energy on heating and cooling, they aren’t worth what you’re paying for them.  With that in mind, here are some other things to consider.

  • Make a list of your priorities. Start with your reasons for replacing your windows.   Is price your biggest consideration?  That will definitely help guide you.
  • You aren’t limited to the style of your existing windows.  For example, the double-hung window remains the most popular style in the U.S. for homes, but there are other window styles which offer greater energy efficiency or ease of operation.  Or perhaps you want to update the look of your home with something more modern.  Or maybe window styles that let in more light.  And in some cases, you may even be able to enlarge the window opening to install bigger windows.  (That all depends on the structure around the existing window – we can help advise you on that.)
  • Not all your windows throughout the house need to be the same style. This is a big mistake many homeowners make, and we’re happy to let them know that they can choose just about any style.  There are certain window styles that work better over kitchen sinks, for example.  Crank-out casements or sliding windows are much better options than trying to lean over a sink and push a window open.   A window with art or obscuring glass might offer more privacy in a bathroom, for example.  And check out the window combo shown here in this photo courtesy of Marvin (we are a Marvin Authorized Replacement Contractor BTW).  Operable windows on either side of a picture window over a cooktop let in lots of light but access to the side windows is safe since the hardware is away from the stove top.
  • Choose options that will cut your window maintenance needs.  This saves both time and money.  Look for clad exteriors or windows made of fiberglass or vinyl that don’t need regular repainting or staining.  Choose windows that tilt in so you can clean the exterior and interior from the comfort and safety of your home.

These are just a few tips – we’ve got a lot more.  But these basic ideas can help you narrow down your choices to a list that isn’t overwhelming.  We can take over from there and help you select the best windows for you and your home!  Contact us today so we can help you choose your new windows!
