Tips for MN Home Siding Inspections

Have you finished your fall maintenance list yet?  Did you check your siding?

When it comes to home inspections and maintenance, the siding is one place that is often over looked and not always examined carefully when evaluating the condition of a home. The siding on your home, however shouldn’t be overlooked since it is one of your home’s main points of defense, the outer shell and what is protecting you from the outside elements. You want to make sure that it is in the best shape that is can be in, especially with another Minnesota winter just around the corner. You want to keep up with the condition of the siding for the best possible results, since you want to make sure that your home is comfortable on the inside as well as looking nice on the outside.

Things to Check When Inspecting Your Siding

  • If you have wood siding, two of the most common things to watch out for are peeling paint and rotted wood. You need to pay special attention to the area underneath the wood to look for the rot. Check by chimneys and bay windows, as well to get a better look at whether or not there is rot.  Carefully inspect areas where the trim meets the siding.  Moisture commonly gets into these areas first.
  • Vinyl siding can be dented and scratched, and it can also be melted or deformed with time.  These are all things that you need to be aware of when it comes to doing your siding inspection. You want to replace those siding pieces that have damage.
  • If you have stone or stucco on your home’s exterior, then you have a long lasting, very durable siding choice on your home. But moisture can get under these materials as well.  Look for cracks or gaps as well as areas that seem to buckle or well.  Water can get underneath via cracks or gaps, so you need to make sure to keep an extra close eye on those areas and seal them up (check for moisture underneath first).
