Most homes in the Minneapolis area could benefit from some winterization around exterior doors and windows. That holds true even if your doors and windows are relatively new and are rated as energy efficient.

The first thing we suggest is that you clean your windows and pay special attention to the frames. The same holds true for patio door tracks and exterior door frames. Debris in those tracks and frames can prevent the door or window from sealing completely when closed. And cleaning the glass not only will let in more daylight in the darker months but also give you an opportunity to inspect the condition of your windows and doors. Check for loose glass panes and missing glazing. Minneapolis weather can be particularly hard on home exteriors, and older homes with original wood windows need periodic re-glazing.
Next step is to check for gaps, and then close them up with weatherstripping, expanding foam, or caulk. Not only will this seal out air and moisture leaks it will also reduce noise infiltration from outside.
One last tip to help seal out winter air and moisture: keep your doors and windows locked. The locking mechanisms help ensure a tight seal.
