Twin Cities Homeowner Asks, Do I Have to Replace All My Windows at Once?

It’s a common misconception among homeowners here in the Twin Cities area that if you’re going to get replacement windows installed that you should have all your windows replaced at the same time.  And while that might be ideal and more convenient, we recognize that sometimes budget doesn’t allow for it.  So we’d like to reassure you that no, you don’t have to change out all your windows at once.  In fact, sometimes our customers prefer to do it in phases.  And we’re just fine with that.

Why Replacing Your Windows in Stages Might Make Sense

No matter the age of your existing windows, whether you purchased them all at the same time or have had some of them replaced earlier, it’s likely that they are not all in the same condition.  Windows that get a lot of use suffer more wear and tear.

And then there is the weather they are exposed to.  Windows on the north side of a house tend to get the icy winter wind blasts, and the southern side gets much more direct sun exposure.  Those two issues alone can cause windows to age differently.  And then there are other factors as well.  Perhaps you’ve got a window or two that has been damaged by a playful pup or a child.  Or you’ve got windows in rooms that get a lot of moisture.  All these things can affect window condition.

But you may also have windows that never get opened, like a picture window or other fixed window.  Those windows might be just fine for awhile.  They could go to the bottom of your replacement priority list.

Maybe you’ve got a window or two whose style just isn’t working and you’d like windows that were easier to operate.  We often find that when we meet with people in their homes one of the first problem areas they talk about is the windows over the kitchen sink.  Double-hung windows were the standard for many years, but having to reach across a sink to push a window open can be frustrating.  People often choose casements or gliders for this spot; double-hung windows work fine in the rest of the house.

Another reason for structuring your window replacement project in phases is that it confines the construction work to just one or two areas of your home instead of the entire house.

Perhaps you’re unsure about hiring a company you’re not familiar with to tackle a major home remodeling project like complete window replacement.  We get that; we’ve worked hard to build our reputation for customer satisfaction, and we’re just fine with a homeowner hiring us for a smaller project to see how it goes.  But we believe that once you’ve had us replace a window or two that you’ll want us back eventually to do all the rest of them.

If you know you’ve got a few windows that are ready to be replaced, we’d be happy to go through your home with you and give you an honest evaluation of the condition of your windows. Then we can make recommendations on which ones we think should be changed right away and which ones can wait.  Making sure you’re comfortable and satisfied with our services from start to finish is our goal.
