Understanding Energy Efficient Windows and What Comes with Them

Have you noticed a spike in your utility bills?   Not only is this the new norm, but the costs for heating and cooling will continue to rise as time moves forward. You know you need to save some cash in the process, but did you know that new MN replacement windows can help?

Okay, but like most homeowners you’ve probably got some questions and would like to know more about replacement windows before you make any decisions.  Hopefully the information in this post will help.

Energy efficient windows are able to play a huge role in the amount that you spend on your heating and cooling bill, and they can also make your home more comfortable by eliminating drafts.

5 Elements of Energy Efficient Windows

Energy efficient windows have different components that make a window energy efficient and eliminate drafts:

  • Improved High Quality Frame Materials
  • Warm Edge Spacers
  • Gas Filling
  • Low-E Coating
  • Multiple Window Panes for Improved Performance

The Frames

You can choose from a number of frame materials; each has its pros and cons, and some provide more energy efficiency than others.

Vinyl window frames do not radiate the cold, which is a good thing. The design and characteristics of vinyl windows as well as their economical price make them one of the best values. There is little to no insulation inside them, which would add to the cost and are thought of as a gimmick to some.

Aluminum frames are made up of recycled content and are strong and durable.  However, aluminum is a poor choice if you’re looking for energy efficiency since it easily conducts heat and cold.

Wooden frames are natural insulators and have a beautiful natural look. The inside of the window can be stained or painted to match the interior, while the outside frames can be made from vinyl or other materials to be weather resistant.

Fiberglass frames provide a low heat/cold conductivity that’s on par with wood, but they are much stronger and more durable and also require very little maintenance.  Fiberglass windows are generally more expensive but their benefits make them a wise investment.

Low-E Coating

There are many types of sunlight, and not just the ones that we can see on a daily basis. Windows that have a Low-E (low emissivity) coating can protect against damage from all types of lighting. UV light is what you see, and it can cause items to fade with time, as well as cause damaged to anything with dye in it. IR lighting is what we cannot see with the naked eye, and this can cause a lot of issues with heat or cool air inside the home. When this light comes through, it can cause a home to heat up inside.

Having windows that are rated Low-E  in your home means that both types of lights are minimized inside the home, allowing you to feel more comfortable but also keep your heat bill down.
