Using Arched Windows for the Best Lighting in Twin Cities Homes

When we talk about replacement windows, you probably immediately visualize something rectangular, right?  But have you ever considered replacing your standard configuration windows with something a little different, like an arched window?  (These are sometimes referred to as cathedral windows, although technically those have a pointed rather than curved top.)

Arched windows are perhaps not as common as some other window styles found in homes in the Minneapolis metro area. However, they can provide your home with a unique distinction that is not found in the other houses on your block. Not only that, but when used correctly, these arched windows can really transform the way the inside and outside of your Minnesota home looks. Just take a look at how distinctive the room shown here at right looks.  (Photo courtesy of Pella.)

Tips for Having Arched Windows Installed in Your Home

Frame with Rectangular Molding

When you want to give those windows a finished look, then choose the rectangular molding every time. This ensures that the windows fit into the space but that they also fit into the design of the room. The moldings with the rounded top of the windows create a unique design. This also gives the windows a more premium look than having the normal flat molding.

Circular Elements Add Interest

By choosing to add semi-circular windows above a rectangular opening, you’re essentially giving the home more light from the same area.  You’re still following through with the size of the previous window, but you are adding glass to what is  normally a wasted area. Not only that, but softening an angular space with a curved one adds a little more style. By combining an arched and double-hung window, you create visual interest as well as bringing in more light, all in the same space.

Darker Arched Windows Make the Space a Focal Point

If the room lacks a focal point or a strong statement, then use a larger window to create one. If you don’t really have the wall space for a bigger window, do it with an optical illusion.  One of the best ways to do this is by painting the window frames something dark to make the windows more dramatic. They will also appear larger. Oftentimes the windows can come with a finished color, so you may want to consider something like matte black frames that have been a major trend for the past several years.
