Want Privacy with Your Doors and Windows? Consider Decorative or Art Glass

Do you have spots in your home you’d like to illuminate with natural light but have concerns about privacy?  Bathrooms and entryways are two of the main areas where this issue arises.  So, how do you choose the right doors and windows to let in light but still offer privacy?  You could add curtains, blinds, or shades for privacy, but those window treatments will also block out sunlight.

The best answer we know of for having both light and privacy is decorative glass in windows and/or doors.  Our door and window partners also offer multiple styles of obscuring glass, but in this post we’ll focus on the art or decorative glass options.  Watch our blog for an upcoming post on obscuring glass.

What is the difference between art and decorative glass?

Some window and door manufacturers use these terms interchangeably, but there is a difference.  Generally decorative glass is colorless but incorporates a variety of patterns, grids, obscuring and textured glass, etc.  Art glass has multiple colors, such as the bathroom windows shown in the photo at left here. Often it resembles stained glass.

Shown below is ProVia’s ‘Barcelona’ decorative glass option for both doors and windows.  Note the overall etched obscuring glass pattern topped with a wrought iron look accent.  Decorative glass like this is a great way to create a focal point in your home as well as adding some privacy.

Many door and window manufacturers we partner with offer decorative and art glass options for their windows and entry doors.  These range from obscuring glass in a variety of patterns to multi-color art glass and decorative glass.  For example, check out these beautiful bathroom windows from ProVia with a floral design that replicates stained glass  Both windows are operable if ventilation is needed, but the decorative glass is also obscuring.

In this post we’re featuring ProVia glass options, but Marvin offers glass options as well.  We’ll introduce you to a few of the patterns in a future blog article.
