Warranties to Expect with MN Window Replacements

One of the bigger exterior home improvement project you can do for the home that you own in the Minneapolis MN area is replacing the windows. A lot of people that have this done want to know about the warranty that they are getting with the windows they are putting their money down on. You might see some windows advertised as having a ‘lifetime warranty.’ There are some factors that you have to keep in mind however, when it comes to thinking there is a lifetime warranty when there might not be.

Consider who is giving the warranty.  Is it the company that you had install them or the manufacturer of the windows? Making sure that you work with a company that guarantees their work can make a difference in the work that is done when the windows are installed.

If the warranty is given by the contractor, then they should be the first ones to deal with your windows if there’s a problem.  A contractor’s warranty covers the workmanship, which often a manufacturer’s warranty does not.   If the problem arises because the window was not installed correctly, then this would be entirely covered by the contractor that is putting the window in the home.

The manufacturer’s warranty is usually offered for a set amount of time, usually a few years; the specific amount depends on the windows that you purchase and from what manufacturer. You also want to know if the warranty will pass from one owner of the home to the next if you’re thinking of selling in the near future. That is known as a ‘transferable warranty’; this type is rare.   However, there may be costs associated with transferring the warranty, but it can help sell the home faster if you’re able to provide this for a buyer.  It makes your home more attractive.  Look into this detail before having the windows installed.

Always consider any hidden fees that come with the warranties that you can have put on your windows. Even if parts and labor are covered, there may also be service charges that are hidden within the work. Review this in advance and speak with your contractor regarding it.

Last, but not least no warranty is absolute, so you’re going to want to review the terms and make sure to understand it as much as possible. Some warranties only cover certain things while others might cover more.  And some warranties are pro-rated, which means that as the windows get older, the coverage amount decreases.

Here at Window Outfitters not only do you get the manufacturer’s warranty with the new windows that you purchase and have installed, but we also offer a workmanship warranty when we install them.
