What Are the Advantages and Disadvantages of Slider Windows?

How familiar are you with modern window styles?  One of the most popular today is the slider window (also known as a glider).

These are windows that open horizontally by sliding along the window frame instead of up and down as double hung windows do.

The main reason this type of window is used is to either frame a particular view or to brighten up a room, since they have no frame that breaks up the center of the glass panel and they have minimal exterior hardware.

Even though these are great reasons for choosing sliding windows, they have a number of other advantages as well.  Are sliding windows right for your home?

Just a thought if you are considering replacing your old window with new ones: start the whole process by requesting a quote from your local replacement window contractor.  A professional window installation company can help you with choosing quality windows that won’t break your budget.  They can help you determine whether slider windows are right for you.

2015-10-20_1553The Advantages of Slider Windows

Slider windows have many advantages that are listed below:

  • Low Maintenance – These windows are built with fewer parts than other conventional windows. This aspect makes them low maintenance as well as being cost effective for homeowners like you.
  • Durability – Pulleys or even springs wear and fail over a time period. Slider windows do not rely on these particular components to open; most windows of this style also use glazing that adds to their durability.
  • Energy efficiency – Because these windows do use quality window glazing, they’re very energy efficient. The end result will be more money in your pocket, less money paid out to your energy bills.
  • Ease of Use – Slider windows are very easy to open, they SLIDE to the side instead of having to be pushed up.  This is something to consider if you’re remodeling your home to make it more functional for you as you get older.

The Disadvantages of Slider Windows

With all of the advantages that have been stated above, only one disadvantage can be seen when choosing to replace your old windows with new slider windows – cleaning.

You will find that cleaning the inside of the window is very easy. But cleaning the outside can be quite challenging, especially during those cold winter months. Unlike the other types of conventional windows that can be tilted and lifted so they can be easily cleaned from the inside of your home very easily, slider windows do not tilt for easy cleaning access.  If ease of cleaning is near the top of your list in window characteristics, you may want to choose another style, such as a casement window.  (Check out our earlier post that explains the differences between these two window styles.)
