What Should You Do If Your Window Breaks in Winter

The weather forecast for the near future shows some close to zero temps, which can make emergency home repairs challenging. When it gets that cold here in the Twin Cities, people get concerned about what to do if they have problems with their homes. One common issue is window breakage.  What do you do?  It might not be practical to get it replaced immediately, but of course you don’t want to just leave a broken window.   Your warm heat could be escaping while the cold air is coming inside, making things uncomfortable inside. Plus you’re wasting energy by trying to keep the interior temperature up.

Windows DO break, even the quality ones.  Wind storms can cause a tree to come crashing through them, or you might have an accident indoors that damages your window. While you wait to get that broken window replaced, there are some things you can do to make sure you take of the issue.

Steps to Take in the Event a Window Breaks

Clean Up the Damage

Cleaning up not only removes any shards of glass from the area but makes sure that no one gets hurt. This also gives you a good look at any damage that might be too extensive to fix easily. You want to assess the situation and then take the best course of action, depending on how bad the damage might be. It might be as simple as replacing the glass, but often there is more involved.

Seal the Window Up

Depending on the damage, you will want to seal it up, especially if it is just the glass. If the glass is still intact but cracked, putting a piece of tape over the crack can often be a temporary solution. (Use a sturdy yet flexible tape such as duct tape.) You can keep the comfort level of the home where it should be while preventing the crack from getting worse.

If the window frame is broken as well as the glass, then it is important that you have a professional come out to replace the entire window. The glass can be fixed at a later time, but it is important that the frame is taken care of sooner rather than later. In the meantime, you may be able to seal the opening by installing some of the heat-activated window insulation film until your replacement window company gets to work.

Block Off the Area

It is also important that you put something in front of the broken window, as you don’t want children or pets around it. The window is not as strong as it once was, so there could be safety issues.  Also, this prevents further damage to the window. Restricting access could mean the difference between a simple fix and a major repair.
