What to Ask When You’re Choosing Minneapolis Replacement Windows

As THE replacement window company in Minneapolis, we get asked a lot of questions by perspective customers.  And this is true at about every stage of the process, from initial consultation to final installation cleanup.  We don’t mind the questions; in fact, we appreciate them because it gives us a chance to address the customer’s personal concerns as well as possibly educate them about their window choices.

All questions are valid; but there are those that are basic and should be asked early on in the process.  So if you’re starting out, regardless of which Minneapolis replacement company you work with, ask these questions first:

• Number one is crucial:  Ask the company whether they are licensed, bonded, and insured.  Minnesota law requires a company that does work on a home be licensed as Minnesota building contractor (we are).  And in order to maintain that license they must keep a bond and insurance in place.  Now, it might surprise you but there are companies out there who either aren’t licensed or have let their license lapse.  (You can verify here on the State of Minnesota website.)
• Find out your options – ask what types of windows you can choose from. This is actually a two-facet question.  Many people (and window installers included) refer to window styles as ‘types.’  But window frame material is also a window type.   Generally you might want to start with window frame material types, because each has its pros and cons.  Once you’ve figured out what window frame type would be best for you, move on to window styles.  Most replacement window companies offer the same standard style windows, and most also do specialty shapes.
• How are the windows you install rated for energy efficiency?  This is extremely important.
