What Windows Work Best for a Farmhouse Design Remodel?

One of the hottest trends in home remodeling as well as new home design for the past several years is the farmhouse look.  Maybe it’s the longing for a simpler time or the peace and quiet of farm country.  Even here in the mega-urban locale of the greater Minneapolis area, we’re seeing homes with the farmhouse style showing up all over.  And this trend shows no signs of going away – it’s been one of the top choices of designers and architects for awhile.  The replacement window and exterior door companies we partner with offer products that work with that look.

Whether you’ve got an actual farmhouse you’re bringing up to date or a different type of home you”d like to incorporate farmhouse style into, the importance of choosing the right windows can’t be overstated.  (Shown below is a photo from one of our favorite window partners, Marvin.  This home is a perfect example of the style we’re talking about.)

The Best Windows for the Farmhouse Look

There is no RIGHT way to do it, but there are some elements that show up frequently.  The most common feature of farmhouse-style homes is simplicity – no fancy architectural details, just clean lines.  And usually high contrast.  Most homes (but not all) are sided with frosty white lap siding, which makes black frames a natural partner.  See how this home here really makes use of that?  (Other dark frames like navy and even teal might work.)

But you’ll also see white windows, usually flanked with black shutters.

Windows plural is the big idea, and the farmhouse style is filled with lots of windows to bring natural light into the home.  Using fiberglass window frames like the ones we install from Marvin are perfect, because fiberglass can be used to create thinner yet stronger frames.  Thinner window frames translate into more light through the same size opening.

Double hung windows – or casements or sliders that replicate the look of double-hungs with grids – complement the farmhouse style best.  This is traditional at its best.  As you can see from the photo above, the grids create sharp, clean lines that are the hallmark of this particular type of home style.

If you’re leaning toward a farmhouse-style makeover for the exterior of your home, we’d be happy to consult with you on suggested replacement windows.  Just fill out our handy online contact form and we’ll be in touch!  We are THE replacement window company for the Minneapolis area.
