What’s the Most Popular Window Style in the US?

If you drive around different neighborhoods throughout the Minneapolis area, you will notice that in many spots the homes differ from one another. Some stand out for their uniqueness, and depending on the neighborhood, they have varying ways of showing themselves off and standing out from the other homes around them. Often windows have a great deal to do with that.

Some homes have traditional looking windows, others have windows with a more modern appearance. Many homes have a mix of window styles.  The architectural style of a home will usually determine the windows that look best.

One window style that looks good with any home?  The double hung window.  Double hung windows – where both sections can slide up and down – are a variation on the single hung window, where one section (or sash) was fixed, usually the top. Double hung windows have been the most popular style in the U.S. for quite some time, and they remain one of the top choices for homes.

What Are Double Hung Windows?

Double hung windows come in a variety of sizes and shapes, but the basic structure is the same. They have two sashes that lift up for easy opening and cleaning. There are two parts that move up and down.  (Most of today’s double hung windows have sashes that can tilt inward as well, making cleaning the outside of them easy.)

Why Double Hung Windows Are More Popular

Double hung windows remain popular for a number of reasons. If you’re evaluating replacement window styles, consider them for these reasons:

  • Versatility – These windows allow you to keep them closed or open them from the top or bottom, or both.  The sliding top section makes them perfect for rooms where small children or pets might be present, because the bottom section can remain closed for safety, and yet you can have air flow through the top. They also allow for opening both sections at once (the sashes then overlap in the middle), giving you ventilation on the top and bottom
  • Easier to Maintain – They are easier to clean from inside your home, because the separate sash sections just tilt in so you can clean both sides of the glass. No going outside and standing on a ladder to wash the outside! With casement or slider windows, the only way to clean the exterior is from the outside.
  • Customizable – Double hung windows can have options added to change their appearance. For example, the window shown above has mullions (or grids) dividing the panes of glass into separate sections, called ‘lights’. They can also be ordered with obscuring or art glass, and they combine well with other window types such as picture windows to create a large area with light and ventilation.

No matter what style window you’re thinking of putting in your home, we can help you make a wise choice. We offer a wide variety of double hung windows as well as many other styles.
