Why A Great Entryway Starts with the Right Exterior Door

As a Minneapolis replacement window and door specialist, we pay close attention to what’s trending in the home design and remodeling industry.  One thing we’ve taken note of is that multiple sites are posting inspirational articles and photos on entryways.  Some are exceptionally functional, while others are stunning in appearance.  But what they all have in common is the best entry door for that room.

What Is the Best Exterior Door to Have for an Entryway?

What seems like a basic question doesn’t have a simple answer.  The one thing that we can tell you is the right door for your entryway depends on multiple factors: your home’s design, where the entryway is located, your entryway’s function, your budget, and your personal taste.

Don’t limit the term ‘entryway’ to the front of your house.  Many homes have multiple access points that serve as entryways.  In addition to your front door, you probably also have a back entry and possibly even a spot that links your house to the garage.  Sliding patio doors that open onto decks or other outdoor spaces might have an entry area other than the most common one, the kitchen.

A good place to start is to consider the main purpose of the entryway space.  The most common one is the front – the spot where you welcome guests.  But it might also be the door where you and your family go in and out.  If that’s the case, both groups need to be considered.  That means you want a door that both invites people in as well as one that’s easy to operate.

Another thing to keep in mind is natural lighting.  If your entryway is dark, you might choose a front door that has quite a bit of glass, or one that’s flanked by sidelights and overhead transom windows.  Shown at right here is an entry door and window combination from ProVia, one of our favorite door companies.

The art glass in the door and surrounding sidelights and overhead windows lets in plenty of light, which is important since the gable over the entry area shades the spot.  But the obscuring art glass also offers privacy at the same time – an important consideration if your entry door faces a very public area.

Watch our blog for an upcoming article where we’ll handle more considerations on choosing the right exterior door for your entry areas.  Can’t wait until then?
