Why Are Wood Clad Windows Good for Minnesota Homes?

Recently we shared a post about why we highly recommend wood clad windows from Marvin We offer wood windows because they are the preferred material for owners of older homes who want to preserve historically accurate architectural details.

Of course, that article focused mainly on the Marvin brand, so in this post we want to discuss the benefits of having wood windows with exterior cladding.

Wood Windows Have Unmatched Beauty But Exteriors Are Hard to Care For

Yes, there are windows you can buy that have the appearance of wood, and many of our Twin Cities replacement window customers love them.  They are the perfect solution for some homes. But designers and real estate pros will tell you that nothing can match the beauty of real wood. That’s especially true if you’ve got an older home (or even an historic one) that’s full of the original woodwork.

But our severely cold winters, humid summers, hail storms and high winds that accompany heavy rains, wood windows take a beating on the outside.  In order to keep them looking good and preserve the wood, they require regular repainting or staining.  And wood exposed to direct sunlight can dry out or crack.  Warping is not unusual.

Wood Clad Windows Are the Best for Our Climate

If you have your heart set on wood replacement windows for your home, you have two choices:  wood interior and exterior, or wood interior with a maintenance-free exterior cladding like aluminum, fiberglass, or vinyl.  Because our weather here can be particularly hard on anything wood on the outside of our homes, we usually recommend people opt for wood clad windows we install from Weather Shield or Marvin.

Shown below is a series of double hung windows from Weather Shield in Cherry, with a clear satin stain and extruded aluminum exterior.  The exterior paint is highly resistant to fading, and the warranty covers it for 20 years against things like scratches, dents, or dings from impact.  Good news for hail-prone areas like ours!

There are a lot of pluses that come along with having wood clad windows installed in your home, and we’ll be reviewing that information in our next blog post.  If you can’t wait for our article, why not contact us to set up a personal appointment and we can review them with you?  We are available to meet virtually, in your home, or at a private appointment in our Savage showroom.
