Why Minneapolis Homeowners Need Gutters

We’re seeing a disturbing trend: new homes being constructed without any rain-handling system (gutters and downspouts).  While we appreciate the desire for clean lines and a smooth appearance to the outside of a home, there are some very good reasons why you should have gutters on your home.  (If your home was constructed without them and you haven’t added them, we need to talk.)

Why Gutters Are Important to Protecting a Home in Minneapolis

Living in an area like the Twin Cities that gets lots of precipitation, it just seems like a no-brainer that homes should have rain-handling systems.  We get heavy rains, and the winter snowfalls can melt on roofs. Having a system in place to handle the water from that is also important.  If your home doesn’t have gutters, here are some points to consider:

  • Without gutters, the rains cascade down the sides of your house and can cause major problems with everything they flow across – from siding to door and window frames.  As the water soaks in, mold and rot can result, causing both exterior and interior damage.
  • When no gutters and downspouts are in place to direct rainwater or snow melt away from a house, it pools up at the foundation.  Landscaping damage is far from the worst potential damage. Water will seep into your basement, and you can end up with rot all along the foundation line.  If lower level flooding results, you could be in for a major repair bill.
  • The third reason relates to our previous point.  Not only can you get foundation damage, soil erosion of the ground around your house is a real possibility.
  • The last thing to keep in mind relates more to the health and safety of those in your home. Whenever standing water is present (or water soaking in), the threat of mold development is strong.  Many people are highly sensitive to mold and have major respiratory issues as a result.  Standing water also provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes. And let’s face it, don’t we have enough of those here in the Twin Cities without encouraging a population explosion?

A well-functioning gutter and downspout system is important to protecting your home’s exterior.  If your home lacks one, or if the gutters you have now have seen better days, give us a call to get a quote on new gutter installation.  And if you need more information, we have an entire blog category dedicated to gutters.  Click here to view the articles.
