Some people think of vinyl siding as being a cheap product, and while some of the early vinyl siding options (and in fact some still marketed today) fall into that category, that’s not what we install. Most homes are constructed with some sort of insulation placed between the framing lumber or steel (studs) on the exterior walls. But heat can be transferred by the studs to whatever is on the outside surface. This is called ‘thermal bridging.’ Neither wood or steel is a very good insulator, so to increase the energy efficiency of a home’s exterior, it just makes sense for there to be some sort of insulation between the studs and the siding. That’s where insulated siding – such as CraneBoard®, a foam-backed vinyl, comes in.
Sometimes there are other layers between the studs and the siding, most notably sheathing (usually plywood) and a water/vapor barrier film (‘house wrap’). None of these supplies much in the way of insulation. At times contractors might put rigid foam in place, but that adds another step. Doesn’t it make more sense to do the siding and insulation all in one process? Less time, less labor cost, lower material cost. And it raises the overall R-value of the outside walls.
According to the Vinyl Siding Institute, “In energy codes and energy efficiency programs, such as LEED v4, insulated siding is recognized as a form of continuous insulation.” And CraneBoard® is rated by Progressive Foam Technologies as one of the top insulated vinyl siding brands. (PFT was the inventor of insulated vinyl siding, which hit the U.S. market in the mid 1990s. So we think that’s high praise.)
