Why Minneapolis Homeowners Shouldn’t Fall for the Myth of the Budget Replacement Window

From time to time you may see commercials on TV or even flyers promoting replacement windows at bargain prices.  Don’t believe it for a minute.

A home improvement project should be considered as an investment in your home. It’s not an area where you should be skimping. Price should never be your first priority when you’re evaluating your options for remodeling, especially when it comes to replacing your windows.  We understand that of course financial considerations are important. Homeowners we talk to are concerned about costs, what they can afford at the time. Cheaper windows might seem more feasible. However, those ‘budget-priced’ windows might actually cost you more in the long run.

Always think twice if the price seems too good to be true. While there are affordable windows, there are also windows to beware of – those that have  that have unusually low price tags.

Why We Don’t Recommend Bargain or Budget Windows

They are Lower Quality

These windows are definitely inexpensive, which means the lack of quality is not going to do anything for your home. When replacing older windows, you want something that is going to perform better. This is definitely a project where you should opt for the highest quality you can afford. Those budget windows just aren’t going to do the trick.

They are Not Very Energy Efficient

From what we have seen, those bargain windows aren’t very energy efficient.  The manufacturer has to keep their costs low, and they do it with cheap materials and manufacturing shortcuts. Those inexpensive windows won’t keep your indoor air inside or keep the outside heat or cold from infiltrating. You will find that your utility bills will go up because of this. You will then wonder why you didn’t leave the older windows in because the results are the same. What you’ve spent your money on is newer energy-wasters, that’s all.

The Price Tag is Nice, But the Window Might Not Be

The look of the window might not be as nice as you would think once they’re installed. When these bargain-priced windows are manufactured, most often it’s with cheap materials. Those windows might look nice in a brochure or even from a distance, but up close you can tell. There is a reason they are classified as budget windows, so they are nothing special. They lack the craftsmanship and the quality ‘feel’ more expensive windows have.

Affordable windows are out there but never go with the budget options that you come across. They will end up being a frustrating disappointment. Used mostly to advertise the company and the service, bargain or budget windows aren’t something we recommend. Now, they might be fine for a stucture like a free-standing garage or storage shed. Maybe they’d be perfect for putting windows in your ice house. But not your home. Never choose your replacement windows based mostly on the price tag that is on them. While this should be a factor to consider, it is not something that should make up your mind entirely. We understand our customers have price limits when they ask us about a replacement window project. And we’re happy to work with you to find the best windows possible that fit in your price range.
