Why You Should Clean Your Windows Before Winter

With snow in the forecast and below-freezing temps for the Twin Cities area, chances are if you’re a homeowner here in the Minneapolis area you’re scrambling to get outside chores like gutter clean-out done as well as stashing your outdoor furniture away.  Have you also got window cleaning on your list?

You might think there are more pressing things to take care of, but the truth is that there are some important things that clean living can do for you and your home in the coming season.

What are the Benefits of Cleaning Your Windows?

Getting your windows clean might not be at the top of your regular to-do list. They might seem like something that shouldn’t need to be cleaned frequently. However, did you know that there are actually benefits that come from having cleaner windows? (And if you need some tips, check out our article on how the pros do it.)

Protect Your Air Quality

The air quality inside a home is something that really makes a difference. That’s especially true at this time of the year when we’ve closed things up and we aren’t getting fresh air inside. What you’re breathing in your home is mostly the air that is circulating within it.  Making sure surfaces like windows are clean helps cut down on dust and other small particles in your indoor air.

Let More Light Inside/Conserve Electricity

Now that the days are shorter, we get a lot less natural light inside our homes. So being able to maximize whatever light sources are available is important.  When your windows aren’t clean, you’re cutting down on the light that can come in through them.  You might be surprised at how much brighter it is in your home during the day once you’ve cleaned your windows.  That translates into a lower electrical bill because you can delay turning the lights on.

An additional benefit of this?  In the winter it’s common for many people to get ‘the blues.’ Seasonal Affective Disorder – or SAD – can be lessened by more exposure to sunlight. That can improve your mood as well!

Improve the Energy Efficiency of Your Home

In addition to saving on electricity by not needing to turn your lights on as often, you can also make your home more energy efficient with clean windows.  Yes, the windows we install are themselves energy efficient, but that sunlight coming through clean windows does more than just illuminate your home.  The rays of the sun actually bring radiating heat into your home, so your rooms warm up from sunlight instead of your furnace. Run your heat source less often!

Of course, clean windows will make your home more attractive. :But keeping them clean will also help maintain them in the best shape possible.  But if your windows need more than a good cleaning, give us a call. Or if you find that your windows are a real pain in the you-know-what to clean, we have lots of options that are very easy to clean. Most have features that allow you to do the exterior from inside your home.  We offer free in-home estimates for replacement windows, and there’s no obligation.
