Why You Should Install an Entry Door and Storm Door at the Same Time

Did you know that one of the best home improvement projects in terms of return on investment is to replace your front door?  Real estate professionals indicate that this one project can make a substantial impact on your home’s value as well as its curb appeal.  After all, the front door is usually the first thing people notice.  Another thing to keep in that the second greatest source of heat and cooling loss in a home is through door openings (window openings are first).  So there are two good reasons to make sure your front and other entry doors are in good shape and are energy efficient.  But don’t just stop with the door – combining your new door with a storm door has some great benefits.

Why Adding a Storm Door to Your Entry Doors is a Good Idea

Storm doors perform a variety of functions, among them adding another layer of security as well as more insulation for that spot.  Here in the Minneapolis area our weather has some severe extremes in temperatures as well as substantial precipitation, so we highly recommend storm doors for homes in our area.

And we also encourage homeowners who are having their exterior doors replaced to have storm doors installed at the same time.  Why?  Here are some good reasons:

  • You’ll likely need a storm door eventually, so getting both types of doors installed at the same time means one project, not two.  And chances are since the door contractor is already there putting in your entry door, you’ll save on labor by combining the projects.
  • Installing both types of doors at the same time will ensure a proper fit and that the two doors work together well.  And to facilitate that, we suggest you choose both your entry and storm doors from the same manufacturer.

Shown in the photo here is a gorgeous door combination.  The entry door is a fiberglass fir-look from ProVia’s Signet line, finished in hand glazed Natural Leather.  The storm door is a full-glass in Rustic Bronze.  Notice how well they look together?  (Oh, and did we mention the coordinating side lights that really take this look to the next level?)
