Why You Shouldn’t Let Condensation Accumulate on Your Minneapolis Windows

We get lots of calls this time of year about condensation forming on windows in people’s homes.  Here in the Twin Cities it’s a common occurrence as the cold temperatures set in and we’re spending more time indoors.  Many of the at-home activities we engage in produce moisture in the air; just simply breathing does it, and the more people in your home, the more potential for it.

Of course, once you turn on the furnace the air tends to dry out.  And so naturally turning on a humidifier goes right along with the furnace.  Now, there are good reasons for adding some moisture to otherwise dry air that can irritate your nasal passages and even cause headaches.  But there is such a thing as too much moisture.  And when that happens, condensation forms on your window glass.

To understand the basics of why condensation develops on windows in the winter, check out our earlier post.  In this article we want to discuss the problems that can result if you let that moisture accumulate.

Whenever you see water droplets form on your window glass, it’s best to wipe them up immediately.  Dry off the glass and any surrounding window frame or sill.  Of course, the ultimate goal is to prevent it from happening in the first place, but when condensation does form, don’t let it sit.  Don’t just ignore it as part of winter life in Minneapolis.

A variety of things can happen if you let that moisture stand.  One is that the paint or varnish on your window sills can start to bubble, crack, or peel.  And that’s not just unsightly; if it results in bare wood, you could be looking at rot or permanent damage.  At the very least, your window sills will need some refinishing.

What else can happen?  The water that you do see is just part of it.  Whenever condensation develops on a window, there can be other moisture that’s hidden.  It can get down in the tracks and even leak into your walls.  The result could be slow-growing mold and deterioration of your studs, drywall, and insulation.  You won’t even know there is a problem until it’s a major repair.

And that brings up a health threat: mold.  Mold is not just ugly; for some people with certain health conditions it is actually toxic.  Respiratory problems can develop, and for those who have mold allergies, these problems can be substantial.

So if your windows get condensation on them every winter, it’s time to put a stop to it.  If you’ve tried all the things we’ve suggested in our earlier posts without relief, perhaps it’s time to have your windows evaluated.  For a free consultation, please contact us.
