Window Comparisons: Fiberglass vs. Vinyl

Note:  This is the last article in our series comparing the various types of window frame materials.  If you haven’t read our earlier posts yet, click here to read our comparison of wood and aluminum.  That post also contains links to the other articles as well.

Are you thinking about replacing your windows? If you are, we  would bet that you have a lot of questions regarding what type of window frame material would be best.  In this article we will be discussing the differences between vinyl windows vs. fiberglass windows.

Should I install vinyl or fiberglass windows in my home?

You are not alone as you face this question – around the Minneapolis area we often have customers who ask us this same question.

Below you will find that we have laid out a comparison between vinyl and fiberglass windows in order to help you come to a knowledgeable decision about your replacement windows.  And if you’ve still got questions after you read this article, we’d be happy to schedule a personal appointment at our Savage showroom so that you can take a look at both types of windows and talk with us about the best choice for you.

Window Maintenance

Both of these types of windows are tremendously easy to maintain, but your choice really will depend on what type of window you have. For example, if you are looking at casement windows they will be easy to maintain as well as clean, in spite of the material being used. This includes windows that are single or double hung.

Window Frame Finishes and Colors

When it comes to frame appearance, vinyl and fiberglass are comparable in terms of available selections.  Finishes as well as the color options will mainly depend on the manufacture for that particular window. Many of the manufactures offer a variety of colors as well as distinctive finishes for both types of windows.  We even offer a combination window frame with EnduraShield® fiberglass-clad wood windows from Weather Shield that broadens your options even further.

Window Frame Durability

Vinyl windows are somewhat more susceptible to weather changing conditions, as well as over time the sun has a tendency to wear down the vinyl. On the other hand, fiberglass windows will maintain their integrity and strength in all the different climates. The finish as well as the color goes all the way through the material; this means if your windows happen to get scratched or nicked it will not show as easily. In general, fiberglass windows offer more on the level of durability that cannot be match by other windows.

Energy Efficiency

While both types of windows offer excellent insulation properties that will help you lower those energy bills. Fiberglass windows have a leg up, fiberglass itself is an insulating material and does not require a thermal barrier. Fiberglass windows do not expand as much as vinyl windows do; this means the air leakage is reduced, due to the fact that the window will have fewer gaps as the weather changes.

Price

Vinyl windows are less expensive that fiberglass windows. As a matter of fact, vinyl windows are one of the more affordable types of windows on the market today. Keep in mind that the cost of window replacement will deeply depend on the amount of windows that you are replacing, the quality, the options you choose, as well as their shapes and sizes.  But in general, if you’re looking at windows of comparable quality and features, a vinyl window will be more economical.  But a fiberglass window will last longer, so over time it may be a wiser financial investment.
