Window Condensation: Why it Matters

Our windows do many things for us. They let in natural light, provide a view of the outdoors and protect us from the elements. They can also let us know when humidity levels are too high in our homes.  When condensation appears frequently on the inside of your windows, that means the humidity level inside is too high.

What is Condensation?
Water appears on the inside of windows when the humid, warm air inside the room touches the cold glass of the windows.  Condensation happens because that warm air contracts suddenly when it comes into contact with the cold surface. The water vapor in that air, in turn, becomes the droplets forming on the glass.

Why Does Humidity Matter?
Fogging bathroom mirrors after a shower or car windows when there are multiple people in the vehicle aren’t big deals. This type of humidity is common and, more importantly, short term. However, when there are high levels for a long period of time, your home can become damaged in various ways, and your health can suffer because of it.

  • Discolored Walls, Ceiling and Peeling Paint
The excess humidity can damage paint, and leave unsightly water spots on surfaces.
  • Rotting Wood, Damaged Insulation and Floors Buckling
Moist environments naturally speeds up the decomposition process. When applied to your home, this results in problems with porous, natural materials. This, in turn, can make replacing your windows necessary when frames begin to rot, along with other issues.
  • Mildew Growth
The tiny organisms that make up the film we know as mildew flourish in wet environments. In addition to causing damage to the surface on which they’re growing, extended exposure can cause breathing problems, especially if you have a condition like asthma or chronic bronchitis.

If you have problems with excess humidity, consider investing in a dehumidifier or consult a professional about remedying it. Your health, wallet and family will thank you for it.
