Window Fundamentals with our Minneapolis St Paul Window Company

Shopping for replacement windows can be more interesting if you are familiar with the industry terms. By learning a few words, and finding out a little more about what to look for, you can become knowledgeable enough to make informed decisions, and feel good about it in the end.

A HEADER is that support bar that goes across the top of the window opening, to support the surrounding walls. As the structure is being built, the walls go up with holes in them, where the windows and doors will be placed. The windows are then inserted into these openings, shimmed for balance, and nailed into place. The header ensures that this wide opening it reinforced and not resting on the window itself.

THE JAMBS are the side supports. As with a door jam, these are the surrounding supports that hold the weight of the door swinging back and forth on it. Like the windows, they are fit into openings, shimmed and nailed into place.

THE FRAMES are the surrounding structures that hold the sliding WINDOW PANES, that open and close. Together they comprise the window itself. This is bought as one piece, and inserted into the window opening of the wall.

GLAZING is the material that holds the window glass in position, and seals it.

PANES are the individual pieces of glass that are fit into the window frames.

SASHES are the moving parts of a window, they can open up or down; in or out, or even swing open like a door.

SILLS are added to the base of the window to give them a little function. They serve to place things like flower pots on, or work to channel water away from the house. Windows can be installed without sills and still work fine.

MUNTIN BARS are the aesthetic trims that separate the panes of glass. These have become unfashionable over the years as they make cleaning a little more challenging, so many new windows come with muntin bars as an option that can pop in and out like a piece of trim.

Hopefully this will arm you with enough information to talk intelligently when you go out to purchase and install Minnesota replacement windows this year, or you can call us at Window Outfitters. We don’t have a script; we just treat you like family. 952-746-6661
