Window Options for Varying Home Styles – Part 2

In Part 1 of this post we reviewed the basic window styles, and we touched on the main traditional home styles and the best windows to go with them.  In this post we’ll pick up where we left off, handling more modern home issues.

Windows for Contemporary Homes

Contemporary design takes many turns, with asymmetry and simplicity guiding the way. This style became popular in the 1970’s and continues today with innovative ideas changing the landscaping of the architecture. Multiple angles and roof designs might be incorporated within the style of each home. Although accenting is kept simple and light, towers and boldly articulated windows give artistic impression. Large walls of glass treat occupants to increased light and wonderful views. Casement, awning, and fixed windows are the most popular additions to these homes. Bold, uneven lines and varying sizes of windows fill the landscape. Colors used are black to hide the window outline, or the opposite would be bright colors to make them stand out.  Specialty shape windows that fit within unique architectural features are popular, as are combinations of window shapes to produce a unique look.

Window Considerations for Green Homes

Green homes have become very popular as utility prices continue to rise as well as an increased focus on the environment. Energy savings is the driving force. Greater insulation, EnergyStar doors, windows, and more efficient appliances are all used in these more eco-friendly homes. Geo-thermal heating and solar panels are used extensively. Triple-pane windows with enclosed shades offer energy savings. Different window glazes may be used for the north and south facing windows. The style of construction is not as important as the energy savings in these homes. Exterior colors are generally earth tones, coinciding with the purpose of this type of structure.

Smaller Homes Need Windows That Provide More Light

One interesting development is the trend toward smaller homes.  While the ‘tiny home’ movement is growing, what’s more universal is the construction of homes which have a traditional design but are smaller.  An example of this is ‘the Not So Big House’ (click here for more information on this intriguing concept). ‘A Not So Big House’ has a compact design that gives the appearance of a larger interior and exterior. The use of multiple level roofs and ceiling heights can give this appearance. Different level ceiling heights can create an illusion of larger space. Natural light is drawn in as much as possible. The use of multiple colors helps the ambiance of comfort. Many styles of windows are appropriate for these smaller homes. A space-adding bay or bow window creates the feel of a larger space without the home itself being larger. Grilles may be used in varying styles in windows and doors to create focal points. Contrasting window frame colors add depth.
