Winterize Your Minneapolis Home’s Windows Before the Snow Flies

Even though we’ve had some freezing overnight temperatures here in the Minneapolis area, serious Minnesota winter hasn’t set in yet.  While there is still time before the snow comes and buries us all, you should consider how you’re going to keep the energy bills down and how your home is going to stay warm and comfy.

The first place that you should look into is the drafty, old and inefficient windows that you have throughout your home. These can create cold areas throughout the home and then give you higher energy bills.

If you’re not ready to replace those old windows just yet, there are things you can do to cut your heating bills somewhat and make your home less drafty.  In order to improve the energy efficiency and heat in your home, consider doing some of these things with your windows:

Tips for Winterizing Your Windows

Caulk around the frame and the panes: This is an easy and inexpensive way to get the windows to stop letting in drafts and letting the hot air out if the window components are loose. Not only is caulk easy to put on but also it can last a while. If you put a candle flame next to the window and it flickers or is put out, then you’re letting in drafts. Caulk around the window.  (If you’re not sure how or where, Popular Mechanics has some good tips.)

Add Rubber Weather Stripping: This works the same way as the caulk. You place it around the drafty areas in the window to get the wind to stop coming in and the heat to stop going out. It can be cut to fit the specific window that it is going on.

Window Insulation Film:  This is a plastic shrink wrap type of film that is placed over the window. You just cut it to the desired size and then stick to the edges of the window. You’re then able to keep the heat inside the home since it cannot go through the shrink wrap around the windows.  However, this should be your last resort, because once the film is on, you can’t open the window without removing the film.  Plus it’s not very attractive.  Save this option for really drafty areas that you may not use during the daytime, such as bedrooms.

Heavy Heat-Retaining Curtains:  Insulated drapes can cut heat loss and drafts, but only when they’re closed.  These can cancel out noise outside noise somewhat in addition to cutting down on drafts and heat loss.  But they don’t do much when they’re open, so their benefit is seen mostly at night.  Again, these are great options for drafty, cold bedrooms.
