When the weather is relatively mild, it might be difficult to determine how your windows are performing. Walk around your rooms – do you feel a draft? Hold your hands next to your window frames – feel any air movement? Is it cold close to your windows? If you answer yes to any of these questions, it’s a good indication that your existing windows aren’t doing a very good job at protecting you from the weather outdoors. And if that’s the case, you’re spending much more on your heating bills than you should be.
If you’re still not sure whether your windows have air leaks, there are other things you can do to test, such as passing a burning candle or a match around the perimeter of the window. An air leak will cause the flame to flicker.
