Yes, It’s Cold and Windy in Minneapolis, Which Makes It the Perfect Time to Consider Replacement Windows

If you’re a homeowner here in the Twin Cities, thinking about getting your windows replaced is probably not at the top of your list right now.  You may be dealing with a car that won’t start, piles of frozen snow blocking things around your house, or icy sidewalks.  Maybe you’ve even had a spin-out or a skid as you’ve been driving to and from work.  But this weather makes it a really good time to evaluate how well your windows are doing there job.  A cold, snowy Minnesota winter is the best time to check on how well your current windows are doing at keeping the cold and the wind out.

Now, you may have some condensation building up on your windows, but that’s a whole other matter. That’s most often due to high humidity indoors rather than problems with the windows.  (Check out this informative article for more on the issue.)

Are Your Windows Letting Minnesota Winter Weather Into Your Home?

When the weather is relatively mild, it might be difficult to determine how your windows are performing.  With the current temperatures and the high winds we’re having around the Minneapolis metro area, today is the perfect time to check out whether you’ve got air leaks from your windows.  Walk around your rooms – do you feel a draft?  Hold your hands next to your window frames – feel any air movement?  Is it cold close to your windows?  If you answer yes to any of these questions, it’s a good indication that your existing windows aren’t doing a very good job at protecting you from the weather outdoors. And if that’s the case, you’re spending much more on your heating bills than you should be.

If you’re still not sure whether your windows have air leaks, there are other things you can do to test, such as passing a burning candle or a match around the perimeter of the window.  An air leak will cause the flame to flicker.

Windows not keeping old man winter outdoors where he belongs?  Then it’s time for new energy-efficient replacement windows, to make your home as comfortable as it can be.
