Your Soffits and Fascia Need Love Too

As the weather warms up, you’re probably getting outdoors cleaning up your house and yard after winter.  People think about things like raking the lawn, washing windows, and power-washing the deck, but you do not want to neglect other important parts of your home. You want to ensure that you’re doing the necessary maintenance needed around the entire house, including the soffits and fascia. While these two parts of the home are not regularly thought of, they should be placed on your spring cleaning list this year.

These parts of the roof help to protect the overall structure as a whole. They can keep the critters out of the inside of your home, while also protecting it from the rain and moisture that might make its way to the inside. They can also help to ventilate the attic space which makes air move in and out.

Protect the Wood of Your Home

Make sure the structural areas of your roof are completely covered. You do not want any wood exposed  or any underlying roof structure exposed since this is where the moisture from the spring rain can come in and cause damage.  Give your soffits and fascia a good inspection and make sure you haven’t got any missing or buckling trim pieces.  (If you’re not sure which is which, the fascia covers the roof edges, while the soffit covers the underside of the eaves. )

Clean Your Gutters!

While this should go without saying, gutter cleaning is also something that is widely neglected. You want to remove any and all the debris from the inside of the gutters to ensure that they are in tip-top shape. Water should be able to move out of them and down the spouts.  Your rain-handling system is a very important part of your roof.  Winter can leave a lot of debris in your gutters, so now is when they should be cleaned and ready to go for the next big rainfall.

Stop Mold in its Tracks

When you look at the soffits and fascia, make sure there is no mold growth on them. Any mold and mildew should be cleaned off with some bleach. When you stop it in its tracks, you’re preventing it from growing any further. You do not want to find it growing into your home, causing sicknesses and structural problems within the walls.

There are many replacement soffit and fascia choices out there, but by maintaining them correctly, you do not have to worry about replacement.   With a little care and preventative maintenance you’ll  feel confident about the roof’s ability to keep the rain on the outside.
