2018 Window and Door Trends – Many Changes Have Been Made for Luxury’s Sake

Even though we’re just weeks into 2018, there have been numerous trends in home remodeling that have emerged from so many places, near and far. Replacement of windows and doors has made a comeback in the home improvement industry, and many of the homeowners we talk to around the Twin Cities are looking for new ways to change the look and feel of their homes.

There are actually three big changes in particular that are gaining a lot of attention in the market and these three changes are making big waves in households – designer-focused options, expansive views and the ability to have affordable luxury inside the home.

2018 Window and Door Trends

The Shared Space Movement with Expansive Views

In residential design, this is one of the biggest movements making waves. What is shared space? Think of urban street design – a concept that incorporates road sharing with bicycles, vehicles, and public transportation using the same area.  In a home it might be a home office that’s also a guest room when needed.  Your kitchen might also have office space, or your laundry room might also function as a home gym area.  To maximize the function and aesthetics of these shared spaces, often adding larger window and/or door areas can help.

Another trend in home design is open space – living areas flow seamlessly into one another without walls or other structures breaking things up.  The concept began with the ‘great room’ that often adjoined the kitchen, but it has expanded.  In some homes, there are not even full interior walls dividing rooms. Instead, room dividers or partial walls designate an area. This allows light and air to move freely.

Indoor and outdoor designs are becoming one with each other. In a way that seems almost flawless, this is changing the way that windows and doors are opening up the areas that usually would keep the spaces separate.  For example, you might consider putting in sliding French doors to give access to your yard rather than just larger windows.

Flowing, flexible floor plans that are open, inviting and have clear lines are something big in the home design world. Windows and doors are being added to homes have to have an expansive glass area with minimal obstruction of views.  The photo below (courtesy of one of our favorite suppliers, Weather Shield) is a great example of this.

Double hung windows are still one of the most popular window styles to go with. An oversized double hung delivers a beautiful view of the outside world but still gives you ventilation, which a picture window would not. Weather Shield is a great company to go with when you need windows and doors that open up to the outside world.

What else is on the horizon in the replacement window and door industry for 2018?  Watch for our upcoming post with more on this topic.
