You’ve probably figured out by now that one of the top styles in home design and remodeling is the farmhouse style. Now, that catch-all category can include a lot of different looks. And it can be a whole-house exterior makeover or perhaps just one room. The most popular area to convert to farmhouse style? The kitchen. But if you’re picturing an out-of-date appearance, we’d like to introduce you to the MODERN farmhouse style.

While there may be design elements that your grandmother might recognize (such as big, deep kitchen sinks), modern farmhouse differs from the traditional look. So if you’ve stayed away from jumping on the farmhouse design trend because you’d like your home to be more up to date, you may want to take another look at today’s farmhouse style.
Some of the hallmarks of modern farmhouse:
It might surprise you that one of the most popular window styles for the modern farmhouse look is a very traditional one – the double hung window.
According to Marco Vincent, Lead Architecture Consultant in the Marvin Design Lab, black interior double hung windows without simulated divided lites, or grids, are the most complementary selections for the farmhouse design. “Double hung windows can absolutely feel modern – counter to common opinions,” he said.
Check out the photo above – note the striking contrast between the white siding and the black window and door frames. But you’ll also see white or light-colored wood-clad frames as well. And they can be combined – black exterior, white interior. Note the windows are double-hung. Casement windows with narrow grids, such as the window shown here, also work well with this style. The grids give the look of a traditional double-hung window with the ease and practicality of crank-out hardware. (Casements are often preferred in kitchens because of this feature.)
